BBC Radio journalist and presenter Ritula Shah,a member of the Jain community has won this years GG2 Media & Creative Arts Award. She was presented with the award at a ceremony in London on November 27th.
The GG2 awards are now in their 15th year and are organised by the Asian Media and Marketing Group, the publishers of Garavi Gujarat.
Ritula is the lead presenter of the World Tonight, a daily news and current affairs programme on BBC Radio 4. She has become a role model for many in the Asian community since her confirmation in October 2013 as the lead presenter of the World Tonight, one of the most thoughtful program on BBC Radio 4 that focuses mainly on the foreign affairs. Ritula travels extensively for her work and in the past year has reported from Guantanamo Bay, China, the US and Europe.
Radio 4’s Controller Gwyneth Williams praised Ritula’s “‘experience, intelligence
and international perspective” and said ” I am delighted to hand Radio 4’s treasure that is World Tonight to Ritula Shah”
She was hailed as a “persistent but polite interviewer” by Alaistair Burnett, editor of the World Tonight who noted that she had the a breadth of knowledge across the global news agenda and British Politics needed for this uniquely challenging role.
On receiving the award said she was “delighted and honoured” to be recognised for doing a job she loves. Ritula says it is a huge privilege to be given access to all kinds of people and places.
“Although very important individuals can be impressive, it’s usually the ordinary people who allow you into their homes and lives, who are the most memorable and moving.” says Ritula.
She is also an active member of the Oshwal Jain community of London and participates in various Intitute of Jainology’s activities. Currently she is ranked 61st of the 100 most influential women in the UK.
