On 29 October 2024, Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a reception at 10 Downing Street to celebrate Diwali. This annual event to mark Diwali was first initiated some fourteen years ago by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Those in attendance at the reception included key figures from across the Jain, Hindu and Sikh communities, alongside members of the armed forces and politicians.
Representing the Jain community were members of OneJAIN, including Nemubhai Chandaria, Dr Mehoolbhai Sanghrajka, Hasubhai Vora, Rumitbhai Shah and Nirajbhai Sutaria. All were honoured to celebrate Diwali at No 10, marking the 2550 Nirvan of Bhagwan Mahavir.
The doorsteps of this famous residence were decorated with Rangoli and the inside corridors with lamps and marigold garlands. Seema Malhotra MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary for the Home Office, welcomed all attendees and introduced the Prime Minister.
The evening started with a traditional dance, diya lighting and prayers, before the Prime Minister gave his message of goodwill. The event was an important gathering of cultural significance.
