On Sunday 10 November 2024, His Majesty The King lead the U.K in the annual two minute silence to remember those who had fallen and suffered in conflicts at the National Service of Remembrance (Remembrance Sunday) at the Cenotaph in London.
The King was joined by members of The Royal Family, the Prime Minister, past Prime Ministers and other senior politicians and faith representatives to mark the Armistice of the First World War and all other conflicts, including World War Two, the Falklands War, the Gulf War and conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, involving British and Commonwealth forces.
This year, Mr Dilip Shah, Institute of Jainology (IOJ) Director, was honoured to represent the Jain faith at the Cenotaph, alongside other faith representatives. The IOJ was grateful for the opportunity on behalf of the UK Jain community to pay its respects to those who came before us and made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in peace.
The Jain faith has been represented at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday since 2018.
Many Jains also participate in local Remembrance Day celebrations.
The most recognisable emblem of the Remembrance Sunday & Day is the red poppy of the Royal British Legion (RBL). In 2018, the RBL introduced the ‘khadi’ poppy to commemorate the contributions and sacrifices made by British Indian soldiers. It is of a material of the kind from which Mahatma Gandhi’s clothing was made.
